How Iván Chávez took Grupo Vidanta from successful to superb

Date: July 24, 2019

Iván Chávez has been the Executive Vice President (EVP) of Grupo Vidanta since 2007. In the twelve years since his tenure as EVP began, Chávez has been responsible for taking the Latin American travel and leisure company from a successful corporation to a world-class conglomerate. His supervision has led to the opening of the Mayan PalaceinMazatlán and The Grand Mayan at Vidanta Los Cabos in 2007, as well as the Mar de Cortés/Puerto Peñasco International Airport in 2009. In the years that followed, from 2011 to 2013, he opened The Bliss and The Grand Bliss at Vidanta Riviera Maya and helped to complete no less than five new attractions at Vidanta Nuevo Vallarta. These include the fourth tower of Grand Luxxe; Spatium, a full-service luxury spa; Santuario, the destination’s entertainment hub; and the Jack Nicklaus Academy of Golf, which gives both beginners and experts an opportunity to hone their skills at a pro-designed, state-of-the-art golfing facility.

And that was only the beginning.

In 2013, La Plaza added high-end, boutique shops to the other luxuries available at Vidanta Nuevo Vallarta, and then construction beganatVidanta Riviera Maya for a custom-built Cirque du Soleil Theater. The following year, the theatre was inaugurated with the premiere of JOYÀ, the only resident Cirque du Soleil outside of the United States, while The Beach Club brought superior service to the resort’s poolside paradise. That same year, Mayan Palace and The Grand Mayan pool area opened at Vidanta Acapulco, while the Grand Luxxe Residence Tower opened at Vidanta Nuevo Vallarta. Their Grand Luxxe Nuevo Vallarta and Grand Luxxe Vidanta Riviera Maya have been recognized by the American Automobile Association (AAA) with the Five Diamond rating for “Ultimate Luxury.” This rating indicates that a hotel or resort consistently exceeds expectations with superior amenities and service, making it “Inspected & Approved” at the highest tier recognized by AAA.

In September 2017, a 10-hole The Lakes Course became the third golfing experience at Vidanta Nuevo Vallarta, along with The Nayar Course and Norman Signature Course—each being eighteen hole courses. The shorter The Lakes Course was designed to offer a different experience, to showcase the resort’s beloved landmarks while also offering nighttime play until 11 PM. The opening of this course came just in time for the resort’s Second Annual Celebrity Invitational Golf Tournament. As the name of the event suggests, it was attended by various celebrities, including Boston Red Sox/New York Yankee pros like Johnny Damon, and Chicago Bears quarterback Jim McMahon, Golf Channel host and travel expert Matt Ginella, and Olympic figure skater and silver medalist Nancy Kerrigan. Proceeds of the event went to benefit earthquake victims via the National Center for Epidemiological Contingencies and Natural Disasters, in addition to underprivileged youth in Riviera Nayarit via Grupo Vidanta’s Delia Morán Vidanta Foundation. This is just one of many examples of how Chávez has used his influence to build mutually beneficial relationships with other professionals in the travel, leisure, and entertainment industries.

Another example is the day-to-night concept, which opened at Vidanta Los Cabos. The day-to-night entertainment space illustrates a successful collaboration between Grupo Vidanta and Hakkasan Group, a leading international hospitality company. The venue features lounge bars and a restaurant that was designed to reflect Mexico’s unique cultural heritage. One example is Casa Calavera, a Día de los Muertos-themed beachside cantina serving authentic Mexican food with a contemporary flair. The venue’s Grand Opening kicked off on September 23, 2018, and didn’t end until the early hours of Sunday morning, with DJ superstar Calvin Harris closing the unforgettable weekend with three hours of smash hits that had the Perrier-Jouët Champagne popping its corks.

In more recent news, Chávez has been overseeing the launch of Vidanta Cruises, the first-ever Mexican luxury cruise line, ideal for intimate nautical adventures. Vida Vacations private club members will enjoy an almost 1:1 passenger-to-crew ratio aboard a luxury vessel that has been refurbished, redesigned and redecorated by expert shipwrights in Europe and Mexico. The ship sails throughout the Caribbean, the Pacific, and the Gulf of California; bespoke voyages will include onshore excursions to some of Mexico’s most beautiful travel destinations.

Chávez’s influence also extends to the President’s Leadership Council of the Inter-American Dialogue, an invitation-only governing body comprised of leading business people and influencers. In this capacity, Chávez’s extensive experience in business strategy, development, and operations have a direct impact on the Council’s agenda, which is committed to the values of democratic governance, prosperity, and social equity. Chávez is also a member of the Forbes Business Council and a board member of the Wilson Center’s Latin American Program in Washington, DC. These groups and other activities have given Chávez an opportunity to exercise twelve years’ worth of leadership as EVP at one of Latin America’s most influential real estate conglomerates, where he extends his talents beyond the scope of the travel and leisure industry to benefit the broader community and the world at large.

There are many projects underway at Vidanta's properties in Nuevo Vallarta, Riviera Maya, East Cape, Acapulco, Puerto Peñasco and Vidanta Cruises. Many completion dates are years away. That said, the properties are beautiful now and enjoyable. Stay tuned....
